It is stated that social media is used by majority of people in order to maintain social bonds with other people and get news events. Although there are some advantages of this trend, I believe that disadvantages outweigh them.
On the one hand, keeping in touch with others via social media can be advantageous regarding time-efficiency and availability of continuous conversation. Firstly, individuals who are far from each other can communicate through social media platforms instead of spending money and time to move from one place to another. For instance, apps, such as Telegram or Instagram, provide timeless conversation via both video-calls and massages. By using them people can interact with each other whenever possible. Secondly, nowadays individuals always have access to social media platforms. It means they can get in touch with each other despite their location or workload. Chatting through messages in transport or talking via video-call while doing household chores can be taken as an example to illustrate the advantages of social media. Thus, people can keep a regular conversation without concerns of place and availability.
On the other hand, keeping in touch by social media is not without trade-offs. Digital devices that are used on daily basis, including phones or laptops, may result in problems related to health. Spending much time on social media to talk to someone may bring about poor eyesight as harmful light from screen has a feature to damage some of eye spheres. To illustrate, bright screens of smartphones and laptops may contribute to vision problems if people are exposed to look at the screen for a considerable period of time. Moreover, social media platforms are not as effective as face-to-face interaction in terms of social ties. In other words, long distance between individuals prevents them from having sincere conversations which, consequently, leads to the loss of bonds. Without physical interaction, it becomes more difficult to share thought and emotions which are considered to be essential to understand others feelings and maintain interpersonal relationships. Additionally, maintaining talks through online platforms may be problematic due to technical limitations. Taking into account that in some remote areas the internet is less available and sometimes electronic devices may not operate properly, online conversations may be hard to keep. This, may cause challenges with maintaining natural flow of interaction.
In conclusion, while online platforms are beneficial regarding time and place, I believe that the demerits, including health deterioration, weakening of social relationships and digital challenges are much important.
