It is true that nowadays social media takes the place of conventional methods of communication, and in the contemporary era, people increasingly use social media for communication and to follow news and events. In my opinion, the disadvantages of social media far outweigh the advantages.
Many people consider only the benefits of digital networking platforms. It is true that interactive digital networks give users access to communication over long distances and allow them to be aware of what is happening all around the world. This could be useful for people who live far away from one another or for people who do not like face-to-face interactions. In addition, social networking sites can have many functions in terms of news, education, social interaction, etc. Social apps such as Facebook and WhatsApp can offer instant breaking news and allow users to share what is going on in every corner of the world. Furthermore, these apps could be used as a means of communication. For instance, people can communicate with their friends who live in another country, share videos, exchange instant messages and share their own microblogs.
On the other hand, social media can encourage people to share information that is not evidence-based because, recently, many people have wanted to gain new followers, as this gives them a chance to earn money. For this reason, many elderly people would not prefer to use digital networking sites. Such misleading information can build up and leave people in a state of confusion. Another drawback of online social networks is that fraudsters can open accounts in the names of other people or prominent figures to steal money from them. As senior citizens are not good at detecting them, they may fall into the trap of scammers and be left financially vulnerable.
To sum up, in this era of advanced digital networks, the disadvantages of some platforms far outweigh their advantages, and people should be careful when using apps or communicating with their relatives, as fraudsters can be found everywhere.
