In this contemporary epoch, the proliferation of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence tools has sparked debate over their impact on human thinking. While one school of thought holds that these types of technology are making people think less as they provide quick and easy answers, I am firmly convinced that AI also offers valuable support and enhances our intellectual abilities when used responsibly.
On the one hand, some opponents argue that AI tools can increase cognitive laziness. There is no getting away from the fact that with the aid of AI in providing both instantaneous and plausible-sounding answers, people are likely to form a habit of utilizing it in almost every case because they are inclined to avoid the mental effort of deep thinking or find AI more useful and convenient than brainstorming on their own. To cite an example, many students might copy and paste AI-generated essays to submit to their teachers as completed assignments rather than developing their own ideas. Nevertheless, attributing this intellectual laziness solely to AI is a logical fallacy. By the virtue of the fact that AI is merely a neutral tool, like a calculator or the internet, the detrimental outcome stems entirely from irresponsible usage. Consequently, when utilized appropriately, such as requiring AI to brainstorm outlines, check grammar, or offer counter-arguments, not only will AI not impair critical thinking but it will also actively stimulate analytical skills rather than replacing them.
On the other hand, I hold a strong belief that AI can be a powerful learning assistant when used properly. First of all, AI tools help people access many different perspectives. In lieu of passively reading a single source, people can ask AI to provide opposing perspectives on an issue, which forces users to think more critically and be selective about information rather than overdependent. It stands to reason that engaging with contrasting viewpoints helps people broaden their horizons and identify deficiencies in their own reasoning. Furthermore, AI can assist people to proactively delve into and apply knowledge. For instance, after acquiring new knowledge of English or becoming familiar with a new kind of exercise, some students prompt AI to generate similar types of exercises for further practice and provide tips for better retention instead of simply copying AI-generated answers unconsciously. By consistently applying learned material to different tasks, students can deepen their comprehension, identify their flaws and optimize their learning process. Therefore, AI can be beneficial in augmenting human intellectual capacity when utilized efficiently.
In conclusion, I reaffirm that whether ChatGPT and AI lead to diminished human thinking is contingent on how they are used. When utilized judiciously and effectively, these tools can foster learning and hone deeper cognitive engagement rather than supplanting it. Conversely, a passive reliance on AI risks eroding essential human grey matter.
