In many people’s view, today’s examinations are not effective enough to evaluate the educational success of students, a statement I strongly agree with. I firmly believe that the current system is quite inconvenient due to numerous reasons and should be changed as soon as possible.
Initially, the conventional approach only allows people to use a piece of paper and a pen, which is not very efficient. As is well-known, society is in an era of technological developments. Hence, these changes should be implemented in exams as well. Consequently, the success rates of students may increase because today’s children are incredibly efficient at using technological devices, which would absolutely contribute to their grades. For example, in a minority of high schools in Turkey, computer-based examinations are an option for students as well. As a result, it is observed that the students in these schools have shown significant improvements in terms of their grades.
However, besides the method, I hold the belief that this concept should not exist at all. This is because the lives of individuals should not be only dependent on an exam that lasts two or three hours. Instead, the assessment process should take into consideration other matters such as the attendance rates or the performance of students during classes. Thus, the evaluation would be more fair and healthy for people. For instance, in European countries, the behaviors of children in class also affect their final grades. Because of this teachers state that this situation enables deserving students to pass their classes easily.
In conclusion, the existing examination methods are not suitable for today’s world and are quite obsolete, which should be addressed immediately. In my opinion, however, the current system is unable to assess educational achievement accurately, and its criteria should be reconsidered due to the aforementioned reasons.
