Regarding the question at hand, I firmly believe that it is better if independent organizations carry out and control scientific research. In summary, I advocate for a system where governments are responsible for providing resources and leave other aspects, such as choosing topics and day-to-day operations to independent organizations. In my opinion, this is the best way to safeguard research from harmful influences. In the following essay, I will articulate my rationale, in addition to providing relevant examples.
Firstly, it is important to note that research conducted by private companies is often misleading. These corporations have a disastrous track-record of supporting biased research. Moreover, when these organizations fund research, they try to retain control over publication. Therefore, they only publish what supports there agenda. There are numerous examples of these unethical practices in various industries, such as big farma, soda, and tobaco companies. It is mainly because of the conflict of interest that I oppose giving private companies unlimited and unchecked freedom to fund and conduct research. While there have been cases where corporations have funded useful research, these examples have been few and far between. We need to be mindful that these organizations are first and foremost profit-driven. As a result, their actions should be observed with a certain level of skepticism. Simply put, these organizations often fund research for marketing purposes. Rarely have we faced such unethical practices in advertisement industry. As a result, I firmly believe, governments should impose proper rules and regulations in the field of reserach, before we can trust research that has been funded or conducted by these companies.
In sharp contrast, the primary goal of democratic governments is the well-being of their population; due to this, they are best suited to fund research. Nevertheless, I believe that governments should not conduct research themselves. Not only is this not an efficient plan but it is also prone to fall to malpractices and coruption. What needs to be done is that they must empower independent, impartial, and autonomous organizations, such as universities to conduct research. This is the most cost-effective approach that ensures results of researchs are trust-worthy and reliable.
