Band 5+: Many people believe that social networking sites (such as Facebook) have had a huge negative impact on both society and individuals. To what extent do you agree.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Quite a few people are of the opinion that social networking sites like facebook, Instagram etc tend to have a huge negative impact on people and the whole society in general. I highly believe that these social networking sites are affecting out society in the worst way possible. These sites have made humans incapable of understanding that what is real and what is not. Moreover, these sites even affect mental health of people.

Because of social networking sites, people are loosing their minds. Life is life. These social networking sites cannot be a substitute for life. People are not going out and socialising because they prefer scrolling on these sites instead. They have no real time friends and tons of online friends. Mindless scrolling on these sites can create disassociation from life. For example, a person who want to meet a friend. He would rather prefer to meet his friend via video call rather than going out for lunch or coffee and having a real time talk.

The said sites can even affect one’s mental health. When people scroll through these sites and see highlights of others lives, they tend to think that everybody else’s lives are better than theirs. And thoughts like these can affect one’s mental heath as well as one’s self esteem to say the less. This kind of comparison can make one’s life seem dull and boring. For example, if a person sees a celebrity’s post on these sites and sees them living in mansion and driving Porsche, he/she would sulk about not having these things and start cursing their lives

In conclusion, these sites are breaking down people’s confidence. People tend to lack social skills because they prefer scrolling through these sites.
