Band 7+: Many people believe that social networking sites (such as Facebook) have had huge negative effect on individuals and society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people contend that using social websites, for instance, Facebook, can badly impact local communities and societies as a whole. In my opinion, although some sites can be beneficial in many ways, I believe that the detrimental impact they have had on the mental well-being of an individual is significant and not negligible.

The primary reason that social networking sites could be advantageous is connectivity. With the advancement of technology, websites such as Instagram and Facebook are booming, and people nowadays prefer these sites as a mode of communication. Not only that, but these sites can help people connect with people from around the world, which can further develop their communication skills and help them explore different cultures and ethnicities.

However, there are obvious drawbacks to using all these websites. One of the major disadvantages is deteriorating mental health. Due to addiction of these apps, people prefer to stay home and scroll all day rather than being social. This Isolation may result in the heightened stress levels and depression. Another major concern is the negative influence on an individual’s mind from all the fake influencers. After a period of time, people start comparing their lives with influencers they see on social media, which often leads to dissatisfaction, low self-esteem and a negative mindset. Therefore, overuse of these technological advancements can be harmful to one’s mental well-being.

In conclusion, despite of all the minor advantages, the negative impact social media apps have on the overall health of a person is more profound and long-lasting.
