In this cutting-edge technological era, social networking sites have become a central part of people’s lives. However, it has a bad effect on individuals as well as on communities. I completely agree with this suggestion since people suffer from addiction and privacy, while misinformation and polarization are obvious issues of developing social networking sites.
The increasing number of online platforms has become the reason for several problems for individuals. Firstly, the addictive nature of social sites has raised significant concerns. These platforms’ design is targeted at spending endless hours scrolling, neglecting their priorities, which leads to anxiety and stress. Privacy concern is another problem that can appear because of networking sites. The function of platforms, such as posting photos and adding personal information that people use with enthusiasm, is yet it is dangerous. Photos, posts, and videos can be saved and changed and used without permission, causing problems such as identity theft, cyberbullying, or blackmail.
The impact of social networking sites on society is profound, and there are several ways in which platforms negatively affect communities. Platforms tend to spread fake news and misinformation, which can have bad consequences. For example, during incidents, misinformation on social media leads to public panic. In addition, social networks are able to create echo chambers, which means users are exposed to content that they are interested in or watched before. The bad thing with that is if they get involved with one idea, they cannot be open to other perspectives.
To sum up, I believe that not only people, but also society can be affected badly by social networks. Obsession and danger of privacy are apparent issues that can affect individuals, while communities can face problems such as misinformation and echo chambers, which appear because of using social media.
