In addition to the three basic human necessities, affordable healthcare is another essential neccesity for human beings. In poor countries, unavailability of healthy food, clean drinking water & unhygienic living conditions, lead to various types of illnesses. In the notion of saving a life being better than earning more money, I agree.
In this day and age, people living in developed countries can barely defend themselves from diseases as they have had better living conditions relatively. The people in poor countries like mentioned earlier, don’t have this luxury.
In these countries, awareness is low. From those aware, even fewer amount of people can afford the medication bill. Some tend to seek foreign medical treatments as well. But the remaining majority can’t afford it and resort to witchdoctors and visiting religious places. Lack of awareness also plays a part.
As a person that grew up in this kind of society, I know firsthand the struggles people go through. Lucky few survive. but most people, in order to spare their families of the inevitable surmountable debt, they stop going to medical facilities or buying the medicine alltogether and spend the remaining time they have with their families in agony and misery.
In conclusion, I believe the drug companies should lower their price, because it is morally wrong to idly stand by and see someone die for financial gain. Nothing can replace a human life, while they can gain back the money by coming up with other drugs as diseases will always exist as long as we exist. They can even make lower quality drugs as this is better than nothing and make significant impact on poor people’s lives.
