Many people say that most learn a foreign language because they need it to travel, work or study in the country which speaks that language, but others say that there are many other reasons that a person would learn a foreign language. I believe that being fluent in multiple languages can help any individual in fields other than work or travel.
First, many believe that the primary motivation for learning a foreign language is for practical reasons. Being able to speak the local language while traveling, makes the experience more enjoyable, as it allows for easier navigation and deeper cultural understanding. Moreover, in the professional world, knowing a second language can give the individual more job opportunities, or it is needed for relations with client from other countries.
On the other hand, there are several reasons to learn a foreign language, beyond travel or work. First, learning a new language may help with cognitive abilities, like memory or multitasking. At the same time, it allows individuals to appreciate different cultures and read books or articles in the language the country speaks. Thus, many people learn foreign languages, as a hobby or as a passion, since it challenges and trains their brain and abilities, or it allows them to discover more about one country’s culture.
In conclusion, many people may think that learning a foreign language is useless if it is not for a practical purpose, like the one in the second paragraph, which is true unless there is any sort of interest in other countries culture. I believe learning a foreign language is not mandatory, but it could help with opening our field of knoledge.
