It goes without saying university time is supposed to be the best years of our lives, nonetheless it does not always reflect the truth. Personally, I am convinced that those years are to be fruitful and useful for a student’s future career. Thus, subjects student opts for should be aimed at acquiring knowledge indispensable at present, the knowledge that guarantees better employment prospects, sometimes even discarding their personal interests.
In modern times, higher education that corresponds to a student’s appeal is a luxury that not everyone can afford. We are living in harsh realities when higher education does not promise a high-salary job. Today’s market is a very competitive realm where everyone tries to surpass their competitors by offering unique skills that not everyone possesses. Therefore, students have to be aware of modern demands and expectations of their future employers and opt for subjects that correspond to the modern pressing needs to become a highly valued worker.
Nonetheless, we cannot simply disregard people choosing subjects based on their preferences as there are variety of vivid examples proving that sometimes personal interests are the only motivation people need to become a highly qualified professional. I know of the cases students so passionate about chemistry, they have discovered new elements and compounds during their research in the university. Motivation moves mountains. Unfortunately, this cannot be applied to every sphere, in the majority of cases only to researchers.
Despite some controversies over career prospects, I decided to follow the path that would provide me with stable income and visual prospects. Today it is a rather risky venture to just follow your dreams, not being completely sure you can get a decent job.
