Band 7+: Many people say university students should choose subjects according to their interest, while some think that the students should choose subjects like Science and Technology to get a job. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

University students across the world are required to have a degree in order to get employed. Regarding this some believe that a degree should be based on the interest area of learners, while some argue to have these qualifications based upon some compulsory subjects as Science and Technology. My opinion aligns with latter view and reasons for that will be discussed in further paragraphs.

There are two predominant reasons why some people advise to have a degree in the interest area of students. First of all, they will not only enjoy the learning, but also, they will be able to engage with these modules easily if they have chosen them according to their interest. This will develop the curiosity of learning more about the particular area and might comprehend the particular thing easily, instead of feeling burdened of their studies. Therefore, they might be able to convey their knowledge of those concepts efficiently rather than rote learning and they might perform better in the examination. In addition to that, every student has a different area of talent in which they have high interest. If they are allowed to choose the subject based upon their interest area, it will naturally flourish their talent and they will be end up being expert and employed in that particular field. When people are free to work in their interest area, they will end up getting high satisfaction and joy of performing the tasks instead of being unsatisfied with their jobs.

Whereas I am with a view of people, who believe that core modules like Science and Technology must be taught to all students regardless of their interest area. Two primary reasons of believing in this thought are expressed. One of the most integral reasons is that these core modules can inculcate a few relevant skills among students to be employable such as decision-making or cognitive thinking. This can result into a wide range of better job opportunities. Moreover, certain areas may have a very limited practical use in real market, even if the students are interested in those. These areas can become irrelevant due to constant and rapid changes in the job market as literature or craft have very limited scope compared to science or technology; therefore, the students will not get a proper job opportunity or compensation even after having adequate qualifications.

In conclusion, the learners may enjoy subjects, might perform better in examination and flourish their talents, if they have selected the programs according to their interest, but I truly believe in the fact that students should be taught core modules at their universities in order to get relevant opportunities and to meet the expectations of the job market.
