Band 6+: Many people think that the main purpose of schools is to turn children into good citizens and workers, rather than to benefit them as individuals. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

People often have different opinion about what schools should focus on. Certain individuals believe that education should mainly prepare children to be good citizens and workers rather than focus on personal benefits. In my opinion, I disagree with this idea because I believe learning should help students find their own self. This essay will explain why personal benefits are more important.

The first reason for my opinion is schools should teach students how to understand their own self before teaching them how to work. This is important because many student study only to make their teacher or parent happy, not because they know what they truly like. For example, a student may always study medical because people say it give a good job, but deep inside the student feels happy when learning about the sea. If school never let them try what they like, they grow up feel empty inside. Thus, this show that true learning should help students find what make them happy, and not only what make them working.

Another reason for my opinion is that when students understand themselves, they can learn to care for the world. This is the first step to become a good citizen. For example, when a student finds out that they enjoy learning about the sea, they start to care about sea life and clean ocean. This care can make them study how to protect the ocean in the future. Therefore, this show that when schools support personal benefits they help students grow into good citizens who protect their environment.

In conclusion, personal benefits are the main goal of education. When students know themselves, they can be happy and do good things for people and the environment.
