When children are not taught values such as empathy, politeness and discipline, they are more likely to act in inappropriate ways in public. For instance, if a child was raised in a family, where verbal abuse is a normal thing, a youth could imitate such behaviour in social media, which results in bullying. Another problem is the overuse of social media. A lot of young people spend too much of their leisure time online, where they encounter toxic content, racism, disrespectful language and cyberbullying. It could also normalise disrespect towards others and reduce empathy. For example, watching inappropriate content can lead to similar actions offline.
To solve these issues, schools should introduce comprehensive social behaviour education programs. These programs have to focus on developing emotional intelligence and conflict resolution skills. It might help students to understand the importance of respect to other people.
