Due constant growth of society, large supermarkets are surging while small local shops are facing trouble competing with these huge supermarkets. This essay will include the cause and its consequences on the local community, while also providing with some solutions that might help keep the society sustainable.
Firstly opening of huge luxurious supermarkets in local areas have crushed small businesses in the same locality, this is mainly because supermarkets are more convenient and offer a wider range of services and products as well as they offer slightly better prices than local shops. It effect the local community in many different ways, for starters, when the amount of small businesses decrease in a society it contributes to large scale unemployment in the area, and we have learnt that increase in unemployment is directly correlated to crime rate thus local communities could be suffering of crime because of unemployment. Then due to lowered number of shops it also effects the variety of what we purchase for example, when there were different shops in my locality I had many brands to buy from for simple dish washing, but now that there is one big supermarket I can only purchase for the brands they offer.
A preferable solution to this local issue would be to convince large supermarkets to open in collaboration with small local shops, which would benefit both and also provide more employment opportunities. Then it possible government should support local shops by giving them subsidies that they could use to attract costumers, lastly awareness could be spread about supporting local business in the local area.
Finally I wouldn’t say that these steps would completely eliminate big supermarkets taking over small local shops but it would surely halt the situations until we can find good solid solutions and perhaps also be a reasonable way in which both the local shops as well as the supermarkets could both exist.
