Band 5+: Many smaller, local shops close due to the opening of large supermarkets. What are some of the problems and possible solutions for this?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Hypermarkets or supermarkets are now abundantly opened which leads to the shutting down of local stores. In the essay, I will discuss the problems and suggest solutions for this issue. Firstly, I will point out how smaller shops lack in providing a few things and the solutions to overcome it. Secondly, I will highlight the customer service issues that local shops face and what could be the possible solutions for them.

Large supermarkets offer a lot of items at one stop that is not available in local stores. Many small shops keep only a few necessary things that are in demand, but there are not many options if we want to buy something else. If the shops offer their customer much more options rather than just a few, it could boost sales. This would lead to people visiting these shops as they won’t have to roam around in the big complexes of the supermarket. Also, due to higher prices of goods in local shops, people prefer going to hypermarkets. Small stores should also focus on some discount schemes and marketing strategies to attract customers.

One of the most important things that local shops lack is customer service. Most of the hypermarts have volunteers looking after the buyers if they need anything or if they face any problems. Smaller shops could also provide this service in other ways, such as asking for customer feedback, informing about the ongoing or upcoming discounts and providing with best quality products. This will result in building a customer base who will often visit the store.

In conclusion, different issues need to be solved for small stores to compete with the supermarkets. The commerce department of all the areas should initiate awareness about the solutions to this problem.
