Band 6+: Many today feel that attention spans are becoming shorter due to the prevalence of social media. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some segments of society argue that increasing difficulty in maintaining focus stems from excessive social media use. I wholeheartedly agree with this perspective, and this essay will delve into the underlying reasons for this growing trend.

Primarily, it’s an undeniable reality that for many individuals, life without their phones seems unimaginable, largely due to the pervasive influence of social media. These individuals are constantly connected to their followers, sharing their daily activities on their profiles and stories. Consequently, every notification they receive becomes a potential distraction as they’re drawn to engage with comments and track likes, diverting their focus from the task at hand.

Secondly, there exists another group of individuals who habitually indulge in social media updates during their leisure time. This behavior often leads to difficulty concentrating on tasks. This addiction can be attributed to a depletion of dopamine levels, often referred to as a ‘cheap dopamine’ by some scientists—a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. When engaged in activities that don’t provide the same dopamine rush, such as performing tasks or exercises, the brain signals a craving for more by urging actions like eating or, in the easiest form, checking for updates on the phone.
