Band 6+: Many Vietnamese universities have used the ielts certificate as one of the entrance criteria for their students to be admitted. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Due to the development of globalization, English, known as one of the most universal languages, is gaining more and more reputation for its importance in manifold working environment. Thus, English leaners in Vietnam can now use Ielts Certificate to get into a number of universities and I strongly disapprove of this development for several reasons.

I believe English shouldn’t be the only standard for a University to evaluate a student’s ability. First, despite being very crucial in the current situation, English is still nothing more than a languange, which can be learned by anyone. Thus, can be a huge disadvantage for students living in remote areas or having financial burdance. Moreover, when students can easily be accepted into University by an Ielts certificate, many students might have a tendency to prioritize English over other subjects such as Maths, Physics, Science and many more. While English is just a skill that support people’s life and working, the above-mentioned subjects are not only the basis of a wide range of occupations but also provide a more objective and accurate assessment. As a result of this devastating trend, the future working conditions may be filled with workers who do not have practical knowledge but English, leading to a decrease in the working efficacy in particular and the development of Vietnam in general.

However, Ielts certificate is still valid concerning several jobs related directly to English such as English teachers, English linguistics or translator because English is vital in such cases.

In conclusion, I think Vietnamese university accepting students by only Ielts certificate is not a positive idea for its subjectiveness as well as its negative impact on the future working quality with a few exceptions of English-related occupations.
