Band 8+: Mobile phones should be completely banned in schools. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In modern society, many school authorities are considering to ban smartphones due to students’ excessive dependence on online games and social media. In my opinion, I completely agree with this decision because it allows students remain focused and contributes to maintain distraction-free learning environment while studying and encourages face-to-face communication.

The primary reason is that excessive smartphone use negatively affects students’ academic performance. Many students tend to scroll through social media platforms such as Instagram, spend hours messaging their friends, and play mobile games instead of paying attention in class. As a result, they gradually lose concentration, become less productive, and find it difficult to absorb new information. Moreover, numerous studies have shown that students are becoming increasingly dependent on artificial intelligence tools to complete homework assignments and even cheat during examinations, which prevents them from developing independent thinking and problem-solving skills.

An additional reason for my stance is that banning smartphones encourages students to communicate with one another in real life rather than through screens. During breaks, instead of interacting with classmates, many teenagers spend their time watching short videos or browsing social media. Consequently, they may struggle to develop essential communication skills, teamwork, and self-confidence. By removing smartphones from classrooms, schools can create more opportunities for meaningful conversations and stronger relationships among students.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that banning smartphones in schools is a positive development because it improves students’ academic performance, strengthens their ability to concentrate, and promotes healthier social interaction.
