Since resources for postgraduate research are restricted, some people think that governmental support should be provided only for scientific research, rather than other studies. I completely disagree with this statement, as although, scientific research is very important for society, it should not be the only subject that gets public funding.
First of all, studies in other fields, such as education, law, public relations and history, can make contributions to society that are as significant as those of scientific researches. These fields contain an enormous amount of information, that has still not have been investigated, although the results of these studies can completely change the lives of people in different communities. For instance, the research in criminology can help us identify what are the main circumstances
of criminal behavior among youngsters, and what conditions can lead children to commit crimes from an early age. As a result, government and variety of educational institutions, can develop an action plan, which consists of steps and goals, in order to diminish the rate of juvenile crimes.
Secondly, scientific progress often creates different problems that require studies in other disciplines. For example, artificial intelligence, which rapidly improves day by day, can be used to produce fake videos of real people, also called as “deepfakes”, which may damage their reputation or be used for fraud and other crimes. Research in law can help determine who is responsible and how victims should be protected. Therefore, funding only scientific research could leave society without effective solutions to the problems that new technologies create.
In conclusion, while scientific research should receive great governmental support, other fields should not be excluded, because they also play a vital role in people’s lives.
