Nowadays, increasing completely free university education are open for local citizens. While there are some disadvantages, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
Undoubtedly, providing university education free of charge will use up the finite capital of the government. The global economy has been in a recession due to Covid-19, thus there are quite a number of countries that appear to lack funds. There are more people in society who require funds more urgently than further education for the youth, for example, the healthcare sector and the unemployed group. In addition, it is a waste of resources to spend money for free education. Also, there are not enough quotas for local universities to intake all the tennagers who have completed their high school diploma. Free education will create a burden on the universities and colleges as the professor-student ratio increases. The quality of education will thus result in reduction, it is a concern that there are no longer as many high-quality graduates to contribute back to society.
On the other hand, there are lots of advantages inevitably. First, in the students’ opinion, hardworking and talented students from low-income families will have the opportunity to further refine their knowledge and equip themselves with skills or techniques that can be applied in daily life to improve the standards of living for their families. Second, in the country’s view, more educated teenagers will reduce the unemployment rate and bring about advancements in future years. It is in light of and brings pride to the country if something marvellous is discovered, invented, or researched. Third, in terms of raising the quality of citizens, education plays a crucial role, not only enabling citizens to gain professional insights and employ them in specific and respective fields, but also reducing crimes. According to the World Bank research, the incentive for most wrongdoer is that they are unable to sustain their daily expenses due to insufficient qualifications, such as a university degree. Thus, an increasing proportion of educated citizens brings about a harmonious society and community with greater safety levels.
To conclude, although there are disadvantages to providing free university education for all citizens, there are way more advantages that positively impact the government body and the public. I would suggest providing free university education to those who are talented, subsidizing the people in need and partially sponsoring to raise the overall education level.
