In this day and age, there has been an increasing number of prisons being constructed because some people are of the opinion that the best measure to address criminal issues is to set longer period for sentences, while medical and mental supports are thought to take priority. In this essay, I will discuss both lines of thinking before proposing my own perspective.
On the one hand, there are some rationales that explain why long-term imprisonment would be more effective. It is offenders that pose a threat to the stable order of community, as they carry on illegal activities, instilling residents a sense of fear and anxiety. If they have shown tendency to doing this many times, a sentence in short time will not make any difference. Instead of that, a long-term imprisonment for those dangerous criminals would benefical for both society and the process of rehabitility. Thus, spending more time in prison would help an offender rethink and transform into a better citizen.
On the other hand, it is also logical that medicine and psychology play an vital role in mitigating this problem. For the time being, the living conditions seem to be degraded due to the environmental pollution, or economical crisis, causing the stress and pressure on each individuals. As the world has become more difficulty to survival, the negative thoughts about murder, or other actions that break the laws are raised in inner mind just to sastify and relieve those depression, consequently causing the high rate of crime. Therefore, the urgent assistances relating both physical and mental health need to be given to people and improve the quality of life.
In conclusion, while there is a debate about which aspects relating to crime should be considered to be the priority, I believe that governments should invest on both solutions, providing necessary supports along with strict imprisonment. The number of criminals would significantly decline if there were a collaboration of both solutions.
