In recent years, an increasing number of prisons have been constructed to accommodate prisoners. While many people think that sending criminals to prisons in long-term would be the best way to solve crime problem, others believe that psychological assistance would bring more efficiency. In my perspective, I agree with the former argument.
On the one hand, psychological assistance can reduce crime in a peaceful way without relying heavily on imprisonment. That is because psychological assistance can help prisoners understand their crimes without physical impact, while criminals in prisons are vulnerable to physical abuse and coercion. The counselors will explain the prisoners’ fault. As a result, prisoners can gradually understand the rules and avoid their fault in the future. Besides that, it can also reduce the rate of revenge, because prisoners after physical abuse from imprisonment would tend to take revenge to society. However, I think that psychological assistance is just efficient on weak crimes because it can solve strictly many crimes such as murder.
On the other hand, I strongly believe that long-term imprisonment is the best way to solve crime problem. Imprisonment would provide suitable environment for prisoners to change their characteristic. That is because explanation sometimes cannot help prisoners understand their fault. Prisoners when imprisonment need to suffer from lots of activities serving society. And they also need to suffer from lots of harsh condition. Through these events, they would likely to understand their fault easier.
In conclusion, while psychological assistance can help criminals change their behaviour, I believe that long-term imprisonment is a more effective solution as it can prevent further crimes and protect society.
