An alarming phenomenon the world has been witnessing for the past several decades is the extinction of various animals. A great number of species have been nearing extinction, and many have already reached that point. This problem can be related back to several reasons.
Pollution and climate change could be considered two of the main reasons of the decrease in the diversity of animals. In fact, the rapidly rising temperatures of the atmosphere have caused the melting of icebergs in the North pole, leading to the deaths of polar-bears and penguins. Thus, an extinction of these two animals mights be expected in the coming years. Additionally, water pollution, such as ghost nets, can lead to the extinction of many water animals. For example, some Lebanese beaches in the South are completely filled with forgotten nets that lead to the suffocation and unintentional trapping of water animals. SImilarly, pollution on land does play a role in the fact that many birds and other forest animals are nearing extinction. Reflectile wastes, such as glass and other material, thrown hastily on forest grounds can cause forest fires on sunny and hot days. In fact, reveral forest fires in Lebanon were caused by such disregard to nature, especially on sunny summer days.
Other significant causes of extinction or approaching extinction, are illegal activities such as the unauthorized trade of animals in black markets. Other illegal activities such as poaching animals during illegal dog fights or hunting activities like bird-hunting play a major role in this phenomenon. For instance, certain aras of the North of Lebanon there is a lot of illegal bird hunting, leading to the documentation of the extinction of native birds.
To resolve such a problem, strict rules must be enforced. Habitat preserves and animal sanctuaries must be built with yearly maintenance. Additionally, the diversity of oceans could be preserved by applying strict fishing rules such as the banning of nets, thus decreasing the number of bycatch and ghost nets. Also, organizing beach and forest cleanups can be a great way to prevent water and land pollution, thus, protecting animals.
In conclusion, extinction of animals is a serious matter that must be dealt with sooner rather than later, as nothing is more important than the diversity of our nature and environment.
