Statement of Purpose – Md. Tareq Hosen
In my country 82% of GDP depends on Textile Sector. Having more than ten thousand factory makes largest sector of Bangladesh. So it was not difficult for me to get a job in merchandising after completing my graduation. At the end of that year, in the meeting of Annual Business Closing Report, we were shocked that, factory wasted almost 10 million dollars in sample making. Higher management gave our team to find out the reason behind this dissipation. During this investigation, we found that most the of the rejection comes from resubmission of samples. The number of resubmission was really concerning. While talking with several teams, we found some specific reasons, while technical fault in fashionable apparels is one of the main reason of sample rejection. Many buyers do not provide any physical sample and dependent on analytical data and virtual design. As a result, there is a huge gap in technical operation while making physical sample for submission. There are so many things which need correct during sample making and for that requires high level of knowledge in fashion design. To improve, factory built a new team consisting 6 merchandisers from different countries. All are highly educated in fashion design and Merchandising, as a result this team reduced the wastage to 5 million in the following year as well as produced additional 8 million dollars in fashionable garments. That time I realize that traditional merchandising method is not enough for a sustainable business. To overcome from such difficulties, one must have technical knowledge in fashion design along with advanced merchandising. That time I decided to have a Master’s Program in this field and this is why I am extremely enthusiastic to apply for Master’s Program in Creative Sustainability (Technology) at Aalto University
I have 3 years working experience as Assistant Merchandiser in a reputed export oriented knit garments factory Interstoff Apparels Ltd. During my career I have worked several buyers, some of them are Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Stanley Stella which product is 100% sustainable and environment friendly. I have extensive knowledge in Tech Pack analyzing, accessories of the garments, SMV calculation and fabric construction as well as production planning according to shipment, monitoring production, calculating fabric consumption etc. And my post-graduate program helped me learn about the product pattern design through Autocad, technical textile, Textile raw materials, Textile Testing and Quality Control, Fabric design.
While searching for opportunities to study further, I came across the websites of different world-recognized research-based institutions and found the splendid research exposure of Aalto University. The ongoing excellent research endeavors in the field of Chemical, Biochemical, and Materials Engineering of this university inspired me to apply there. During the Master’s program in Fiber and Polymer Engineering, I expect to gather in-depth knowledge about fibres and fibre-based materials, including wood, paper, and composites, their isolating and processing techniques from biomass feedstock, and renewable and non-renewable sources. Moreover, I would love to learn about the fibre and polymer value chain, polymer structure and synthesis process, and sustainable product development. I am optimistic that the graduate training in this program will nourish my intellectual ability to find genuine innovations and solutions.
After completing this course, I want to contribute to the diversification of textiles in a varied range in my home country. As a citizen of Bangladesh, I believe that the textile sector is the most reliable faith in our economy. But after three years of working, I realized that our country is still lagging in fashionable products and advance technical knowledge in merchandising due to the lack of knowledge and skills in this sector. Any opportunity to pursue a graduate program that focuses on fibre and polymer engineering will encourage me to carry out meaningful research in the future. I am looking forward to a positive response from Aalto University. Lastly, my heartfelt gratitude for allowing me to share my motivation letter.
