It is often said that museums and galleries should display only local artists’ work rather than art from other countries. I disagree with this idea, as I believe that international artworks help people understand different cultures and make museums more interesting to visit. This essay will discuss two main reasons for my opinion.
Firstly, viewing art from other countries allows people to learn about different cultures and traditions. This is because artworks often reflect the history, beliefs and values of the society that created them. As a result, visitors can become more open-minded and develop a better understanding of other nations, which may reduce cultural misunderstanding. For example, the Louvre in Paris displays art from Egypt, Mesopotamia and other regions alongside French masterpieces, giving visitors the chance to experience a wide range of cultures in just one museum.
Secondly, limiting galleries to local artists could prevent artistic progress in a country. This is because many artists develop their skills and style by studying techniques used by artists from other parts of the world. Consequently, without access to international art, local artists may struggle to improve, and the art produced in that country could become repetitive over time. For instance, several Uzbek painters have been influenced by European painting styles, which have helped them create more original work and gain recognition beyond their own country.
In conclusion, I do not agree that museums and galleries should show only local artists’ work. Displaying international art helps people understand other cultures and supports the growth of local artists. For this reason, museums should continue to exhibit both local and foreign artwork
