Band 9: Nowadays, celebrities are more famous for their glamour and wealth than for their achievements, and this has set a bad example for young children. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent times, it is often argued that celebrities are more renowned for their glamour and wealth than for their actual accomplishments, setting a detrimental example for the youth. I largely agree with this perspective, as the influence of fame based on superficial qualities can overshadow more meaningful achievements. However, there are also exceptions where public figures inspire young people through their talents and hard work.

On one hand, the rise of social media and reality television has significantly contributed to the prominence of celebrities who are famous primarily for their appearance, lifestyle, or social status. Many influencers and reality TV stars gain massive followings without showcasing any particular talent or achievement. Instead, they flaunt luxury brands, extravagant vacations, and personal drama, which can create a materialistic mindset among young people. This focus on wealth and glamour sends the message that success is defined by how much money one has or how luxurious their life appears, rather than by personal achievements or contributions to society.

Moreover, when young people idolize these figures, they may develop unrealistic expectations about life. The pressure to attain such lifestyles may push them to prioritize superficial goals, such as pursuing fame for fame’s sake or valuing appearance over substance. This can be harmful, leading to dissatisfaction, insecurity, and the pursuit of short-term validation rather than long-term accomplishments.

On the other hand, there are many celebrities who use their platform to inspire positive change. Athletes, musicians, and actors who have reached the pinnacle of their professions through hard work and perseverance often serve as role models. For example, figures like Lionel Messi or Adele not only demonstrate extraordinary talent but also highlight the importance of discipline, resilience, and dedication to their craft. Additionally, some celebrities leverage their fame for good causes, raising awareness about issues such as climate change, mental health, and social justice. In these cases, their fame is based on a combination of talent, hard work, and positive contributions to society.

In conclusion, while many celebrities today are more famous for their wealth and glamour than for their achievements, leading to potentially harmful impacts on young people, it is important to recognize the exceptions. There are still numerous public figures who set a positive example by demonstrating the value of hard work, talent, and using their influence for good. Therefore, I believe that the overall impact of celebrity culture on youth depends largely on which figures they choose to emulate.
