Band 6+: Nowadays, in many families, grandparents are responsible for raising children. Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

At present, an increasing number of parents rely on their children’s grandparents for childcare. In my perspective, using grandparents to fullfill the expenses of children is clearly a negative development as it creates a burden on them.

First and foremost, relying on grandparents for childcare places a significant physical and emotional burden on older people. This is because caring for young children requires constant attention, energy, and patience, which naturally decline with age. As a result, elderly caregivers may experience fatigue and stress when they are expected to look after toddlers for long hours. Over time, this strain can negatively affect their health, particularly when childcare responsibilities are combined with existing age-related medical issues. For example, grandparents who regularly care for young children may struggle to rest properly or attend medical appointments, which ultimately reduces their quality of life. Therefore, using grandparents as primary caregivers often harms their wellbeing rather than supporting family harmony.

However, I accept the fact that for some individuals this dependency is the only option, and they benefit from the positive result it offers. If a couple marry too early and they do not have a job, they will not be able to afford the lifestyle of their toddler. Even though this reason is genuine, this action is still not acceptable. To clarify, a young father can do any type of work to support his family, it is not possible for elderly to perform this task as he does not have that strength. Therefore, despite the postive effects it have for young couples , they should not ignore the wellbeing of their guardians.

To conclude, I firmly believe that individuals should not rely for childcare on the grandparents as it has negative effects on their life style.
