A major number of sports contests have been held annually in many countries recently. Although many believe that these events are needless, I advocate that they are still a beneficial development in many cases.
On the one hand, international sports competitions are ideal occasions for host nations to enhance their recognition and dignity. Remarkable events such as the World Cup, Olympics or Sea Games can draw the attention of tourists from far and wide to visit the host countries, which is a golden prospect to promote cultures and traditions. As their images are displayed on social media platforms, the countries can establish a reputation as tourist attractions after the events end. Moreover, chances to organize mega sports festivals could generate lucrative tourism and job opportunities for residents. To be specific, host nations might witness a surge in employment, especially regarding hospitality, traveling and services. This is attributed to a massive influx of visitors to the region, hence local inhabitants could gain significant income from thriving tourism.
On the other hand, world-class contests could exert detrimental impacts on the organizers in respect of finance. In particular, organizing large-scale events necessitates cutting-edge facilities and the upgradation of stadiums, which costs the authorities a considerable amount of money. Not to mention that most of those amenities are usually erected for temporary use and normally fall into disuse after the events are over, thus possibly placing financial burdens on the residents and governments. Another downside of staging global-scale sports competitions is the increasing environmental issues. Prestigious international sports events could create a significant amount of waste, from construction debris to single-use plastic bottles used by spectators, which can potentially exert detrimental impacts on the daily lives of local residents.
In conclusion, despite the concerns relating to global sports competitions, I still contend that host nations could reap notable benefits from organizing these events.
