It is true that there are an increasing number of people choosing to delay parenthood. There are several reasons behind this tendency, and I consider it to be a very negative trend.
There are a number compelling reasons that contribute to delaying childbirth. First, parents have had to adapt to various changes in modern societies. It is easy to see many women gain qualifications and pursue a career in recent years. By taking advantage of today’s numerous opportunities to work and study, many families can provide their children with a good fulfilling life. At the same time, being a good parent can be a daunting task for today’s couples. Effective marriage partners may require basic parenting skills as well as understanding of their children’s behaviour and medical symptoms. For instance, according to some papers in New York, 70% of postpartum women have experienced depression due to the challenges in caring for their newborns. These contributing factors result in the persistence trend of late childbirth among many families.
In my view, the changes described above should be seen as a negative trend. Having children later in life can put women’s and their child’s overall health at danger. Studies indicated that women who decide to become pregnant after the age of forty are susceptible to miscarry, while babies are likely to have innate health issues like down syndrome. Furthermore, the age difference seems inevitable in this tendency. The gap between different generations can be challenging for each individual to understand each other, resulting in a complicated argument about the relationship between parents and their kids. Therefore, when couples delay having babies, they and their baby might face several health problems, and inevitable conflicts.
In conclusion, couples having children at a later stage can be explained by the developments in the labour market and academic field, as well as a lack of parenting skills. However, this trend may have adverse effects on overall well-being and family bonds.
