In the contemporary era, migrating into other countries in order to foster personal development is becoming prevalent. Some individuals are of the opinion that relinquishing their old ways and assimilating new lifestyles, customs, and gestures is beneficial with migrants. Others, on the other hand, oppose this thinking due to the importance of preserving their fatherlands’ culture. Although both schools of thought hold merit, I agree more with the former perspective.
On the one hand, homelands’ social norms and behaviors serve as an essential mental support when people relocate to foreign countries. Without adequate original customs and traditions preservation, migrants are likely to loss their national identity, which is crucial for recognising who you are. For instance, some Vietnamese in France forget their mother language, contributing to the undermining of their gratefulness and neccessary patriotivism. Thus, this excessive cultural assimilation can lead to the disappearance of the migrants’ intrinsic cultural values, which always exist in their lineages.
On the other hand, it is imperative to embrace a new culture enthusiastly, paving an easy path for a different life in the host countries. In order to optimize the opportunities of professional successes, migrants must adapt to cultural settings of the countries they are living, especially their laws, societal norms and language as well. The absence of appropriate gestures and attitudes can lead to social isolation and incarceration as foreign residents may do illegal actions or unethical activities. For example, you can be insulted and alienated in a Muslim country if you wear revealing outfits. Consequently, the acculturation of migrants requires an adequate knowledge about the host countries.
In conclusion, while preserving your own culture is undeniably important, it is paramount to adjust yourself to mingle with local customs, and codes of behaviors. Striking a delicate balance between keeping indispensable national identity and cultural adjustments is a nuanced solution for newcomers in order to have a perfectly homogeneous intergration.
