In this day and age, many students tend to neglect science subjects as their major worldwide. In this essay, we will discuss why is this the case and what the consequences of this on society are.
One of the reasons why lack of students in science fields is lack of appreciation for the field in early life of students, such as during the school years. Authorities may find funding subjects related to science not profitable and may cut down their investments in them, resulting in lack of lab materials and new books. Another reason could be that teachers of those subjects may make it uninteresting and repel students from choosing science majors. For example, with enough care for the subject, teachers can make their classes interesting and igniting students love for science. It can also be said that science graduates are underpaid in most of the countries and high university tuitions of certain subjects we are talking about might scare of students who are poorly funded, causing students choosing other, more affordable subjects.
As increase in number of students who are not studying science subjects in universities, science-based fields lack new potential experts and has less and less people on them. Shortage of science graduates is also slowing down technological, medical and other scientific breakthroughs needed by all. Phenomenon we are discussing is also resulting in countries with mediocre to unqualified scientists to make a dependency on other countries with more scientific developments. Situation also leads to poor infrastructure, economics and health-care of a country, making it hard to live. For instance, a country where medicine is not advanced will not be able to meet all the needs of the population, making them go overseas for right treatments. Overall, the effects of this movement on society level slows down the development of a country as a whole.
In conclusion, universities having less students in their science fields is a major problem. There are dozen reasons why this problem originated and there are several effects of this negative advancement on a large scale.
