These days, many students prefer to study through digital platforms instead of attending traditional classrooms. Although there are some advantages derived from this, it is predominantly disadvantageous to students. This essay will explore both the merits and demerits of online education and explain why its disadvantages are more significant.
On the one hand, one main benefit of this is that online education offers students greater flexibility and convenience. In other words, learners can attend classes from any location and manage their own study schedule, which is especially helpful for those with other commitments. As far back as I can get through my personal experience, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I was able to continue my studies from home without any interruption, and this helped me avoid wasting time on transportation and stay safe at the same time. Nonetheless, while there is probably some truth in this, its drawbacks such as physical problems and the lack of interaction are inevitable.
On the other hand, one of the most significant downsides to this is the physical discomfort caused by long hours in front of screens. In other words, students who study online for extended periods of time often experience eye strain, headaches, and even back pain, which can make it harder to concentrate. Based on firsthand observation, take my country Iran, as an example, where many students reported physical issues such as eye fatigue and discomfort during the COVID-19 lockdown because of long hours of online classes. Furthermore, the second demerit of online education is the lack of in-person interaction with teachers and classmates. This absence of face-to-face communication can reduce the effectiveness of learning, as students may struggle to ask questions or participate in discussions. That is why the physical and social disadvantages of online education can have a serious impact on students’ overall experience.
In conclusion, although online education benefits students in many aspects, due to the ignorance of two vital disadvantages: physical discomfort from prolonged screen time and lack of in-person communication, I assert that the demerits of this trend surpass the merits. Thus , there should be a certain degree of restriction on virtual classes.
