In this contemporary society, children are forced by their parents to excel at study and other activities. I believe there are several reasons for this phenomenon, relating to an increasingly competitive society, and this essay also advocates this leads to negative impacts on children.
To begin with, parents are obsessed with children’s success for several factors. They want to secure a bright future and lucrative career for their children, which are gained by excellent results at school and high competence. Parents believe that if their children have good performance, they can enroll in prestigious schools and gain high position in jobs. Another reason for this is peer pressure. In this competitive society, the young generation is becoming increasingly excelled in various fields. Therefore, parents ask their children to work hard to catch up with their friends and make the family proud. This can be seen commonly in many Asian households.
Although parental pressure may force children to study hard, it can detrimentally affect juveniles’ mental and physical health and even decrease their performance. Firstly, having to face pressure frequently and do lots of assignments, children can become nervous, exhausted and stressful. In more serious situations, they can suffer from depression, fatigue, and sleep deprivation. In fact, many Japanese highschool students have committed suicide due to stress. Furthermore, children may have inferior study grades. They feel that study is accompanied with parent’s desire and tiredness instead of autonomous curiosity so they lose the motivation to discover new knowledge. As a result, they just waste time listening to their teachers without gaining new information.
In conclusion, parental pressure occurs because parents want to secure the success of their children and due to highly competitive society. However, I think that this will lead to negative impacts on children as they will suffer from serious mental and physical problems and lack of passion to study or work .
