In recent times, as the world becomes increasingly borderless, the chances of gaining education overseas are greater than ever. This presents excellent opportunities for people’s careers and becomes a milestone path in people’s lives as they live independently abroad. However, there are certain downsides they have to face, including language barrier and the emotional challenge of living far from family.
As we study internationally, we can obtain a greater career quality as they offer a broader knowledge and higher salary. First, this is mainly because working and connecting with diverse backgrounds of people is an eye-opening experience that can broaden our perspectives. Additionally, the better the economic conditions in a country, the higher the income they can offer us. The main cause is that they have more sources to appreciate their employees’ works. For instance, my friend was studying in German, and during her studies she took a part-time job as a dishwasher in a restaurant. However, the wages were significantly higher than what she would have earned as a full-time employee in Indonesia. On top of those positives of studying abroad, the primary benefits are that we get irreplaceable moments by experiencing a better quality of life and learning to live independently while adapting to various cultures. I can say that based on my experience in my previous cultural exchange that I spent for nearly 2 months in France. There, I had to manage my finances and fulfill my daily needs along with the cultural and language barrier I had to face. Had I not taken the chances, I would not have reached the point where I truly grew as a person.
On the other hand, there are shortcomings we can not deny such as the language gap and emotional challenges. Due to the differences in mother-tongue language, we have to learn a new language that can even be difficult to pronounce. Therefore, we sometimes need to take extra language courses, which can be costly. Other than that, living far away from family can be emotionally challenging especially after having been cared for our entire lives. There are times when we face hard days alone, with no one to lean on or share our feelings with. As a related moment I have experienced in 2023, I worked in Spain for a long period, and I had to deal on my own during tough times because it is hard to meet the time to had a call due to the timezone gap.
In conclusion, pursuing education internationally must weigh both advantages and disadvantages to be considered. It is a good choice for achieving a higher-quality career and increasing earnings as they offer a better standard of living that also gives you important experience, while these perks also come with certain drawbacks, such as language barriers and the challenges of adapting to live far from family. However, I believe they are not significant enough to be feared compared to the many good offers we can gain.
