Band 7+: Nowadays technology is influencing modern art in areas such as design, painting and film. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Having become deeply incorporated into the fabric of modern society, digitalization has gradually penetrated and transformed even such a primarily human branch as art. I find the phenomenon a natural occurrence, which poses no harm to the genuine nature of artworks however, relying too much on innovations can cause some stagnation in creative minds. This essay will explore both sides of the issue and my opinion will follow.

To begin with, technologies do broaden the horizons for artisans. Initially, being equipped with such powerful means as AI-powered software and various computer-related innovations implies increased productivity: graphic artists, musicians, filmmakers and those who can formulate prompts coherently may embody their ideas almost immediately and make corrections effortlessly. Moreover, what makes new technologies lucrative for artistic folk is their practical application; rarely can a creator scrutinize his design and polish it purely speculatively, nor can painters or directors be sure about colour-matching and overall scenes before they see something similar on a screen. Finally, if one lives with a tight belt and can’t afford traditional art materials and training but is inspired enough, a person can use his PC to reveal his talent. Hence, the more progressive technologies become, the more democratized and dynamic the domain of art appears.

To continue, sophisticated tools motivate craftsmen to explore new possibilities. Experiments with VR engines, 3D printing, and other sophisticated tools open new dimensions for artistic self-expression and engage more people in the arts, thereby establishing new art forms. Furthermore, the preservation and dissemination of masterpieces digitally, that is in high resolution and with authors’ comments or explanations, allows future generations to understand better modern artists and cut down travel costs for contemporary viewers as they can attend virtual galleries from home. Thus, it would be unfair to belittle the use of modern technologies for the art.

However, due to over-reliance on high-tech means, some creators may partially lose the sense of art. By focusing either on the finest details or large volumes, modern designers, painters, and filmmakers can drift away from the gist of art – new and remarkable ideas. Therefore, it is crucial one be sober about using modern technologies predominantly as helpers and cultivating an artistic spirit in the first place.

To sum up, I perceive the ongoing symbiosis between art and technology as a fruitful development, mostly beneficial to the human race. Although some unwanted effects of the issue could be identified, they seem minor in comparison to the advancements brought along.
