Band 8+: Nowadays, the quality of life in large cities is decreasing. Why is this happening? What can be done to solve this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, the quality of life in many large cities is becoming worse. This essay will argue that this problem is mainly caused by heavy traffic and environmental pollution, and that improving public transport and increasing green spaces are the most effective solutions.

The main reason for the declining quality of life in big cities is traffic congestion and pollution. This is because the growing number of private vehicles creates long traffic jams, which waste people’s time and increase air pollution. Furthermore, rapid urban development has reduced parks and open spaces, making cities crowded and less healthy. As a consequence, many residents suffer from stress, breathing problems, and a poor work-life balance. For instance, people living in Dhaka often spend several hours travelling to work every day because of severe traffic congestion, which affects both their health and productivity.

The key solution to this problem is to improve public transport and create more green areas. This is to say that governments should invest in modern buses, metro rail systems, and safe cycling facilities so that more people choose public transport instead of private cars. In addition, local authorities should protect existing parks and develop new green spaces because they improve air quality and provide places for exercise and relaxation. As a result, traffic congestion and pollution will decrease, and people will enjoy a healthier and more comfortable lifestyle. For example, cities such as Singapore have improved the quality of urban life by expanding public transport and maintaining large public parks.

To conclude, the quality of life in large cities is decreasing mainly because of traffic congestion and environmental pollution. These problems can be addressed by improving public transport and increasing green spaces, making cities cleaner, healthier, and more enjoyable places to live.
