Band 8+: Nowadays there is a trend towards doing social work among high school students. Some contend that such activities contribute to students’ development, others doom them as superficial and decorative. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In recent years, a growing number of high school students have been participating in social work activities, sparking a debate regarding the true value of their involvement. While some individuals applaud their efforts as genuine acts of compassion, others denounce their motives as superficial and insincere. The question of whether high school students should be lauded for their engagement in social work as a means of authentic personal growth or dismissed as merely seeking accolades to bolster their university applications remains highly contentious. Although both perspectives possess their own merits, I am inclined to align with the former viewpoint. Advocates argue that such activities can greatly benefit students. It is widely acknowledged that engaging in volunteer work, community service, or other forms of social activities nurtures empathy and leadership, instilling a sense of accountability and encouraging active involvement in societal issues. This is primarily due to the diverse range of individuals encountered during these activities, which present new challenges and experiences. Interacting with people in various settings can be unpredictable and can allow for a positive impact on the lives of others. For instance, Oprah Winfrey, renowned for her role as the host of The Oprah Winfrey Show, has utilized her philanthropic endeavors to establish foundations and initiatives supporting education, health, and empowerment. Not only has her dedication improved the lives of numerous individuals, but it has also influenced her personal growth and outlook on life. Conversely, critics raise legitimate concerns, arguing that these activities are often superficial and ornamental. They contend that for many students, involvement in social work is merely a checkbox on their resume, employed as a means to enhance their college applications. Reports and discussions in the media have shed light on affluent families or high-profile individuals manipulating their children’s extracurricular activities, including charitable work, to gain an advantage in college admissions. Furthermore, it is argued that social work activities may detract students from focusing on critical aspects of their education, such as rigorous academic coursework. This distraction may inadvertently lead to a decline in academic performance, potentially resulting in university rejection. In conclusion, while some perceive the engagement of high school students in social work as superficial and driven by ulterior motives, I firmly believe that these activities can yield significant benefits, profoundly impacting their overall development.
