In recent years, it has become increasingly common for young people to look up to media and sports celebrities, even when these public figures do not act as positive role models. While this trend can sometimes motivate youth to achieve their own goals, I believe it is ultimately a negative development because it can lead to the imitation of harmful behaviors.
On the one hand, admiring famous entertainers and athletes can have certain positive effects on young people. First, successful athletes, for instance, achieve international fame only after years of intensive training and dedication. When young fans witness these achievements, they are often inspired to work harder toward their own ambitions, which helps them develop a strong work ethic. Second, these celebrities play a major role in encouraging youth to participate in beneficial activities. Because sports stars and media figures make sports, music, and creative arts highly popular, their audience is more likely to take up these pursuits. Therefore, more young people engage in productive hobbies, which significantly enhances their personal development.
On the other hand, I believe this is a negative trend for several reasons, one of which is that impressionable teenagers often copy the destructive habits of their idols. When celebrities engage in reckless actions, such as substance abuse, public aggression, or extreme materialism, young fans may view this behavior as acceptable or even trendy. For example, even when a famous star is involved in a serious public scandal, they often continue to receive massive attention and admiration from their followers. In addition, this obsession creates a distorted understanding of success and social values. Specifically, an excessive focus on fame and wealth can easily overshadow essential qualities like honesty, responsibility, and contributing to the community. As a result, young people begin to measure success solely by financial status, while important moral values receive less attention.
In conclusion, although admiring celebrities can motivate young people to work hard and adopt active hobbies, the tendency of young fans to imitate irresponsible behaviors and prioritize fame over core moral values shows that this phenomenon is ultimately a damaging development.
