In this modern era, many believe that parents’ upbringing is fundamental in influencing children to decide on their future spouse. While some contend that the youth should decide without external influences. However, both arguments have their advantages and disadvantages and this essay will discuss both views and provide my opinion.
In general, strong parents’ consideration toward children’s love and life decisions predominately occurred in a rural area where in those areas, religion, family, and race values have significantly permeated their lives. There are two major reasons for this argument, firstly, they believe that the future generation should inherit traditional values from their ancestors. Secondly, it is natural for parents to want the best partner for their children, for instance, the majority of Batak societies believe that they should marry an individual with the same race background.
In contrast, the proponents of giving freedom to children to decide their partner believe that as a young generation, they have the same rights as the eldest to determine their future. Besides that, parents believe that this is one of the stepping stones to fostering their logical ability, especially in making decisions and navigating life.
In summary, each view has its merits and drawbacks. However, parents have to assist their children in making decisions by bringing their insights and considerations, but it doesn’t mean children have to follow their parents’ ideas. Their insights act as another consideration for children that would impact in making rational decisions.
