Band 7+: People in the community can buy cheaper products nowadays. Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is true that consumer culture is demonstrating growing diversity and richness, people have the opportunity to acquire inexpensive products. While some believe that there are certain advantages to this development, I would contend that it may lead to drastic consequences that far outweigh any benefit it brings

On the one hand, economical products present a range of benefits for consumers. Firstly, the low prices of consumer goods facilitate access for many individuals especially low-income households that can use advanced and contemporary products. Therefore, their quality of life is enhanced and improved. For instance, technological advancements diminished production costs, resulting in reduced prices for electric household appliances including rice cookers, washing machines, and vacuum cleaners. Consequently, this helps people with household chores, giving them more time to unwind, quality time with loved ones, and enjoy leisure activities. Secondly, growing consumer demand will lead companies to expand production, creating more job opportunities and contributing to a decrease in the unemployment rate. For example, fashion brands such as Adidas, H&M, and Zara have expanded their manufacturing facilities in Vietnam, which created substantial jobs for millions of Vietnamese

On the other hand, I believe that the potential drawbacks of inexpensive products are more significant. Primarily, lower prices drive consumers to acquire more than their actual needs, thereby a substantial amount of waste discharged into the environment. For instance, mass production of clothes also known as “fast fashion” generates vast quantities of clothing with quick updates to adapt to evolving market trends. However, this led to significant quantities of clothing waste dumped in some African countries. Furthermore, to cut down on product costs, companies employ low-quality materials and non-standard production processes, which can negatively affect human health. For example, I was treated for poisoning caused by chemicals found in hair dye.

In conclusion, despite the belief that the popularity of lower products can have several advantages, I am of the opinion that its disadvantages are greater.
