Music is a crucial aspect of modern life. However, it has always been a controversial topic about whether a kid’s mastery of a musical instrument is an impeccable achievement. Personally, I believe it could be a feat, but not a groundbreaking one, and I will explain why.
Firstly, it would seem logical that infants are allowed to genuinely pursue their interests at a young age, instead of adopting a “one size fits all” approach where they must learn how to play a musical instrument. Furthermore, not every kid possesses a musical acumen. For instance, while some might be dexterous, learning and applying musical rudiments from cradle due to their ingenuity, others might just not have a hang of it, as their interest lie in a different area. In addition, mastering an instrument is often said to be time consuming, taking the time children should devote to their studies to acquire essential skills for the betterment of their future.
I appreciate the view of some people, saying it boosts a child’s self-esteem, and that one of the self-satisfying achievements a child could attain is the brilliant execution of any musical instrument. Nevertheless, it would appear reasonable that it could be pursued as a hobby, unless music is entirely a life goal or profession.
Above all, while I recognise that learning a musical instrument could help children be more confident, it seems to me that they should not be compelled to practice music unless they are extremely intrigued about it, as their interest might be vested in other fields of life.
