Mental and psychological issues have always been apparent but unfortunately disregarded by society, despite possessing the same detrimental impact as physical illnesses. While some open-minded to the concept of mental illnesses, others do not consider them as equal to physical disabilities. This essay will examine both perspectives then ultimately argue in favour of the latter position.

Primarily, the majority of individuals today are educated, therefore they are more aware of that kind of issues. This generation have highly suffered mentally due to the illiteracy of the precedents, which automatically provokes a sensation of familiarity in similar undergone seen circumstances, making them more accepting to the situation. Emotional intelligence and empathy are other key factors that enables the embracement of individuals with psychological problems. Moreover, a global study has shown that there is an increasing number of psychologists and psychiatrists, which reflects the society openness to this kind of issues.

On the contrary, opposants argue that society tend to skip and dismiss such problems. People don’t think of them as serious and damaging as physical illnesses because their effects are not quite obvious to the abstract eye, which make them oblivious to mentally-ill peoples’ suffering. Furthermore, some of the behaviours that are symptoms of mental issues are normalized in societies, which render the acceptance of this type of illnesses subtle and less acceptable because it is unbelievable since everyone interacts with same pattern.

To sum up, despite the growing awareness in contemporary world, I believe people are far away from embracing the truth surrounding psychological problems, which is widely demonstrated by the feeling of embracement evolving someone when asked to see a specialist due to fear of societal judgement.
