Our personality is determined at birth
Many studies argue that the characteristics of people’s personalities are the characteristics they are born with. Of course, some may argue that environmental factors and life experience play a large part in this, but I believe that human personality development, like our other traits, has a genetic basis and is related to how basic development occurs during gestation. Our personality and emotions are governed by our brain and a large percentage of development is completed in the womb. This is a natural process.
Even though the brain is a dynamic structure, whether we will have a developmental defect in the future is similar to laying the foundation of a building. For example, laying a foundation on a rocky land and laying a foundation on a land with clay soil ensures that the buildings have different strengths. After laying the foundation on a clay land, no matter how much you intervene, it will never reach the strength of a rocky land. Mental development is also like this. Even if a person has a perfect environment or a great ethical environment, a different developmental route or a defect can change all conditions. Of course, our experiences add new perspectives to us, but we should not forget that the evaluation mechanism is always the same. It is our brain that has been with us since the womb. There is even a proverb summarising this situation: “A person with a good temper does not give up his temper”. Actually, it summarises our situation very well. It is our brain that allows us to perceive reality, and what we call reality is a mechanism that translates what we experience into electrical pulses and interprets it. The situation is the same for humans and even for all living things with a nervous system. The reality of all of them consists of the mind they have. Social experiences are nothing but practice. Practical and automated behaviour does not give any information about a person’s personality. They are usually just the theatre of accepted behaviour in order to avoid social difficulties.
As a result, our perception is entirely related to our ability to perceive. Social behaviour and personality are also perceptions, and the mechanism that interprets and directs it is our mechanism itself, not social interaction or our experiences. Since we have a dynamic structure, the application of the practices we have learnt in our daily lives is a mistake for personality analysis. You will go to the grave the way you were born.
