Band 6+: Rich countries are getting richer while poor countries are getting poorer? What is the cause of this? What could be done to solve this problem?

The inequality between developing and industrial countries is rising. This is mainly because of the exploitation of developing countries by the industrial states. Many solutions should be implemented to deal with the inequality.

Firstly, one of the main reasons that developing countries move further into poverty while richer countries grow their wealth, is due to the events of wars that take place in the poor regions of the world. The destruction of infrastructure and the weakening of the workforce due to those events weakens the economy in developing countries while on the other side, war stimulates the economy of the richer countries. Secondly, the capitalistic system is based on a work division with cheap labor in the global south. As a result the global north profits from this division while the people in the global south do the hard labor. Finally, the causes of global warming and climate change, which are also caused by the industrial countries, hit the global south harder than the industrial countries causing further challenges and expanses for the poorer countries.

There are many effective solutions to the problem of inequality. One way to tackle this is to ensure that richer countries take responsibility for developing countries, which should be done by redistributing money through humanitarian aid, paying livable wages, and financially supporting developing countries in tackling climate change. Doing this will help the unequal distribution of wealth to be balanced and give the poor nations some more means to gain more power. Another approach to dealing with the inequality would be to stop the proxy wars in poor countries causing one economy to thrive and the other to be destroyed. This solution would prevent a fallback in the development of the developing country’s economy because of war shocks which can help them to build a strong fundament for wealth.

In conclusion, richer countries taking responsibility, and also a systemic change in the fundamental structure of our globalized economy can prevent the divide between rich and poor from growing further. If governments, companies, and politicians implement those solutions the world could be a better place.
