Schools nowadays are spending a lot of time teaching academic subjects such as history, which made some people think schools should spend more time teaching skills that help students attain employment later on. The two most fatal flaws that this point of view fails to consider are, that academic subjects such as history, math, biology, etc. play an important role in the intellectual development of students, and work skills are ever-changing as the tools and techniques used are always evolving. This essay generally disagrees with the idea that schools should focus on work skills more than traditional skills.

The subjects students are taught in school are vital to their intellectual growth and development and play an important part in shaping their worldview. As Teaching students history, science and literature helps in forming their perspective of the world and helps students develop logical reasoning and communication skills, for example teaching students math might not translate to a direct skill that they can use to get a job, but it will develop that persons mental flexibility which will help them later on adapt and gain the skills needed for their job, also putting too much emphasis on work skills will give the wrong impression for what their role in society is, it is true that work is an important part of everyone’s life but that doesn’t mean that students shouldn’t be encouraged to pursue different paths in life whether its pursuing research or an artistic career which both would be neglected by focusing too much on work skills.

The skills needed in the modern workplace are ever-changing and the same is true of the needs of the market as there is always new tools and techniques to be learned, and this nature of the labor market only emphasises the need for a strong foundational knowledge and mental flexibility which are better developed by teaching traditional subjects rather than specific skills that are needed by the job market at a specific point in time.

in conclusion, it might be true that schools primarily focus more on traditional subjects but this not without merit as these subjects are crucial for the development of students and enabling them to tackle life in an informed and flexible way
