Band 6+: Should governments make decisions about people’s lifestyle, or should people make their own decisions?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people think that the government should ensure the healthy lifestyle of people, but others argue that it should be decided by individuals.

The question of whether healthy lifestyles should be a personal choice or a government-ensured responsibility is a complex and debated topic . While some argue for individual autonomy and the right to choose one’s own lifestyle, others advocate for government intervention to promote public health. This essay will address both views and explain why the ruler should prioritize the welfare of their people.

On the one hand, it is argued that the government should take action to ensure a healthy lifestyle for their people. Firstly, authorities can protecting vulnerable populations such as people in difficult circumstances, the elderly by reducing healthcare costs. Government intervention can help ensure that everyone has access to healthy food and resources, particularly those who may be disadvantaged. Healthy lifestyles can reduce the need for medical treatment and lower healthcare expenses. Secondly, the government should promptly implement legislation to prohibit the sale and promotion of tobacco and alcoholic beverages. Smoking is harmful not only to the smokers but also to people around them, while tobacco producers keep advertising and appealing to people to buy their products.

By contrast, some argue that people should take care of their well-being by themselves. They believe that no one understands their circumstances better than they do. For instance, they may choose fast food because their busy work schedules leave little time to cook nutritious meals. Additionally, many professions, such as law enforcement and medicine, demand irregular hours or unhealthy routines. For example, police officers and doctors often work overnight shifts or encounter distressing situations that can take a toll on their mental well-being.

To sum up, I believe the government should not compel citizens to live a healthy lifestyle, but rather motivate them by promoting awareness of the advantages of healthy living. In this way, the government can help people make better choices in their lifestyle.
