Band 7+: Skills people need to learn and unlearn to adapt to AI era

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming our lives. With this technology increasingly becoming mainstream in most industries, people must learn new skills and shed old ones in order to adapt to this new era.

Certain skills are needed to adapt to this new era, including technical skill, emotional intelligence and analytical skills. Firstly, digital literacy is now a fundamental skill in most jobs. In marketing, for example, marketers use AI to acquire knowledge about customers and refine strategies. Without them, employees stand in danger of falling behind. In addition to technical skills, soft skills such as emotional intelligence and communication are also vital. While AI can do much, it cannot be empathetic or form good human relationships. In customer service, for instance, AI can answer routine questions, but they are unable to understand the complexity of human emotions. Therefore, humans are still needed to address these issues. Finally, critical thinking, though always needed, has become even more essential. Although AI can regurgitate huge amounts of data, the information must be analyzed by humans. For example, doctors use AI to aid in the identification of health issues, but they must choose the best solution based on the context and background of the patient.

Simultaneously, individuals are required to forget some old notions such as only relying on school for knowledge and experience for decisions. One of them is that education only ceases with school or university. Nowadays, education should never stop, as occupations are changing at an accelerated pace. Employees should be prepared to educate themselves and accommodate new developments. Another concept to abandon is relying solely on personal experience when deciding. In the case of business or transportation, AI systems may provide better predictions compared to human estimates, making the job quicker and more efficient.

In conclusion, embracing the age of AI involves learning new digital and thinking skills, improving human qualities like empathy and cooperation alongside rethinking and changing our old habits in work and learning.
