One of the causes of death in many people is smoking and this practice poses a huge burden on health budget .One measure a government can take to minimize this habit is to make it a punishable offense. This essay targets to look at the pros and cons of a policy like that and also to suggest some other ways to reduce puff in society.
Firstly, it is a good approach as citizens will be reluctant to smoke at least in public as they may fear punishment by legal authorities. For example, nowadays travelers smoke in public transport thereby making other non-smoking commuters to inhale passive smoking against their wish .But if it is illegal in such places the smokers will refrain from using cigarettes and other such items for fear of getting penalized, thereby there will be a cut down in number of smokes per day. Also, benefitting those helpless sectors of the society by not getting exposed to bad fumes. On the other hand, if the law is not enforced strictly people find some loopholes in the legislation and will definitely continue to smoke wherever they want.
Hence one of my suggestions is to display alarming pictures which display illnesses related to using tobacco on cigarette packages with notices stating debilitating and grave diseases which smoke can cause. Isolating some smoking areas in public places and prosecute if the law is not strictly observed is another method.
To conclude, while any state legislation could have positive and negative aspects it is the duty of the governing bodies as well as the community to abide by the law which has been enforced for the people’s own good.
