Band 6+: Smoking not only harms the smoker but also those who are nearby. Therefore, smoking should be banned in public places. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In modern times, the issue of banning smoking in public places has become highly controversial. There are those who say that cigarettes should be banned in public places; however, other people feel that they should not. In this essay, I will examine both the positives and downsides of this argument and provide my overall opinion.

Generally speaking, there are a variety of reasons why people believe that smoking in public areas should be forbidden. Perhaps the main reason people are in favour of this idea is that it is deleterious to health. The smoking of cigarettes not only wastes a huge amount of money on its consumers but also has some detrimental effects on them. A person who smokes a lot can often have the probability of developing a serious illness like lung cancer. A survey says that over 8 million people worldwide die every year due to smoking, among them 7 million for direct smoking and 1.3 million for second-hand smokers. Secondly, cigarettes smell bad. If anyone stands just behind a smoker who is smoking nearby, his clothes will smell like the smoke of tobacco for the rest of the day.

Despite these arguments, many people also feel that smoking should be allowed for a number of reasons. The main reason why people feel that the consumption of tobacco should be allowed is because banning it will affect a lot of jobs. Many companies will fire their employees as there will be no need to manufacture cigarettes. A consequence of this will result in a greater number of jobless people in the country. In addition, the government gets a huge amount of money as a form of taxation from the companies that make cigarettes. These funds are used for the development of infrastructure. If cigarettes are banned, less money will be added to the revenue, and it will impact the development.

In conclusion, it must be said that banning tobacco has become an issue with no easy solutions. Despite arguments to the contrary, I feel very strongly that the consumption of tobacco should be prohibited in public areas. If the government takes proper steps to avoid smoking in public areas, we will have a better and healthier society to live in.
